Barcelona Trip

12 of us Arsenal Playa Flamenca Supporters Club members travelled to Barcelona on 16 March to watch Arsenal's second leg against Barcelona in the Champions League Round of 16. Eight early risers flew to El Prat airport at the crack of dawn, while the remaining four took train from Alicante station. On the train, we found fellow Gooners on their way to Barcelona for the match that night. They were the 22 strong members of another official supporters club on the Costa Blanca based 100 km north of where we live. It was great to meet them finally face to face.

On the metro, on the streets and in cafes and bars, Arsenal shirts were everywhere in Barcelona. A "Super Sanchez" flag with an old Arsenal badge and a Chilean flag was on display outside a flat in Placa Catalunya. After shocked by the price of drinks on La Rambla (€11 a pint is not what we are used to in our neck of the woods), we found an Irish bar just off the famous busy street, where drinks were served at more reasonable prices. Arsenal fans started pouring into Flaherty's Irish Bar as the afternoon wore on. With Arsenal songs old and new turning up the volume, a pre-match party was in full swing.

There was a controversial  "Arsene: Thank you for the memories but it's time to say goodbye" banner hung among a few supporters-club flags in the Placa Real, where more pre-match parties were going on. We might be divided in our views, but we are all united by love for the Club, whether you are a "Wenger-Out" or "Wenger-In". The riot police and ambulance crew's presence was conspicuous, but there was no sign of their service being required. It was a relaxing and enjoyable afternoon.

Rain started falling 3 hours before the kick-off. After arriving at the Camp Nou, we had to take shelter in the narrow corridors under the away section until just before the kick-off in our feeble efforts to escape from rain and the cold. With the Champions League anthem ringing out, we reluctantly ventured outside. There were so many stewards in the stadium, but nobody was willing to help us find our seats. In pouring rain and strong wind, seats started filling in the away section, but so many home fans did not bother to turn up in this weather. The stadium was half empty (later on official attendance number was announced as just over 76,000). We knew away supporters would be tucked away up in the cloud. Expect the worst, then you will be pleasantly surprised. A view from the away section was not as bad as expected.

However, the overall condition of the away section was appalling. Earlier this season, Bayern Munich fans walked out of the Champions League group-stage match at the Emirates for the opening 5 minutes in their protest against the ticket price. We don't know how much they had to pay for the match, but we are quite sure that they had a much better deal than we did here at the Camp Nou. We paid €84 or £65 for this colour-faded hard plastic seat on the top layer of the stadium exposed to the elements. Bayern fans must have enjoyed better views in the Emirates' padded seats. We learnt later during our stay in Barcelona that the Camp Nou is classified as a five-star category stadium. What category status has the Emirates been awarded then?

Those who braved the weather were treated to an entertaining game. As Arsene Wenger stated, Barcelona are almost perfect, but not perfect. They always gives you a chance. In fact, we had numerous chances throughout the game. We started brightly. Mesut Ozil carried the ball 30 yards forward before flashing his shot wide from the edge of the box and this was just a beginning. It was disheartening that despite the encouraging start, we fell behind as early as in the 18th minute. However, the goal didn't change the landscape very much. The bottom line was that we still needed 3 goals to progress.

Arsenal got a deserved equaliser 5 minutes into the second half through Elneny's first goal in an Arsenal shirt. The goal changed the entire mood in the away section. We heard one fan say "we might do it".  But Suarez's wonder goal 13 minutes later almost extinguished our hopes. Arsenal didn't give up, though. Welbeck hit the crossbar from the close range and Alexis (how he wanted to score against his old club!) had a goal-bound free-kick well saved. However, it was Barcelona who had the final word. Messi completed an MSN hat-trick to make it 5-1 aggregate.

The scoreline flattered Barcelona. We had enough chances to win the game on the night with Barcelona's defence a suspect, but in the end, what made a difference between the two sides was finishing. We couldn't convert chances we had created, which is an all-too-familiar story in the recent months. Arsenal's European adventure has come to an end for another season, but what mattered was to make sure that the boys would go into the next game with their heads held high. Although the result was not what we hoped for, we were quite happy with our team's spirited performance. We hoped that this night's showing would become a springboard for a successful run-in. Signs are promising as Arsenal ran out a comfortable 2-0 victory at Goodison Park just 65 hours after this match. Making only one forced change from the starting XI that faced Barcelona, Wenger may have found a winning formula.

During the match, there were signs on the board and announcements through the PA system to request Arsenal supporters to remain in their seats until the end of the match. It may have appeared that disappointed away fans deserted their team before the final whistle, but the truth was that they tried to avoid being kept in the stadium for 45 minutes after the match and make their way straight to nearest underground stations. They reached a nearby metro station swiftly only to find it closed.

We saw through the game but made our way swiftly to the covered area as soon as the final whistle had been blown. As expected, we were held inside until all the home crowd donwstairs left the stadium. Relieved from the cold and rain rather than frustrated for the long wait, some Arsenal fans started singing and they were soon joined by others. The bare concrete ceilings created an tremendous acoustic effect, which presented one of the highlights of the night.

We finally got out of the stadium, but we didn't know where we were. Hundreds of stewards, if not thousands, watched us leave the ground as if they had been giving us a guard of honour. There was heavy police presence outside the stadium, with some police officers handling straying away supporters heavy handed. We had no choice but to follow the crowd, without knowing where we were or where we were heading for. Barcelona is an inhospitable city for away supporters. We were very disappointed with how this city and Barcelona FC treated us.

A Cold Night in June and 300 Happy Gooners (The Arsenal Supporters End of Season Party)

Sandra and I were very pleased to represent the PLAYA FLAMENCA GOONERS at the annual end of season party held at The Emirates on 4th June, it was a cold wet windy evening (typical English summer) but the mood was very upbeat and happy as we waited for the reception to open at 19.30.

We started with complimentary drinks in the reception area at the end of this was a dias with both the FA cup and the Ladies FA cup that the girls had won two days earlier (well done) we had our photos taken with both trophies as I was wearing our club cup final shirt I thought the PFG emblem looked good next to the FA cup and could get used to it . (pixs to follow)

The main event was a question and answer session with Ivan Gazidis and guests this was chaired by the stadium announcer (name escapes me), he first introduced  I.G who walked in from the back of the audience to a warm reception, next he introduced Pat Rice who got the biggest cheer of the night everyone stood up and cheered him to the rafters after all his travails recently, next up came Perry Groves, then came the guy who's assist won us the cup in 1979 Graham Rix who also received a rousing reception.

I.G started the session with an update on the works ongoing at the training ground at London Colney to expand the facilities and various other works, but, of course what everyone wanted to know was what was happening on the transfer front "we are in deep and meaningfull negotiations with a number of people which are ongoing and cannot be discussed, a stock answer I suppose, which has been blogged to death.

Various Questions were asked by other members of the audiance from places as diverse South Africa, Hungary, Japan (your not alone Michie) also the Gay Gooners, did you know we are the foremost club to champion gay rights in football. Most of the questions revolved around the 1st team of course and it was the general consensus of all the panel that the team spirit and togetherness was better now than for years, this is put down to the German influence (they haff ways of making you smile) and the never say die attitude especially the BFG.

After the Q&A the meeting broke up with members having another photo shot with the two trophies and the members of the panel.

To sum up what a difference a trophy makes, the atmosphere in December for the Christmas party was tense and angry with I.G giving a very short address and looking like he would like to be anywhere but there and Sir Chips not even bothering to turn up, all in all a good evening well spent.

Training Ground Tour

Very interesting tour luckily it was a beautiful  day so we saw it at it's best. We arrived at 10.30 and were signed in at the gate by security who knew all about us and where we came from and who we were representing. In our group there were people from Japan, Australia, America and all across the UK. We made our way to reception and were issued with  bright orange overshoes as no outside footwear is allowed anywhere in the training centre, coffee and biscuits were provided until the tour started, we were to be escorted round by a member of staff by the name of Sean.

The tour started in the first team changing and boot rooms, I have never seen so many different coloured boots in my life, every colour except black and Olivier Giroud even has a pink spotted pair.

The complex consists of first team dressing room and boot room accessed by the main reception area, first team training pitch to the left of the main building, this is at least twice the size of the Emirates, the reserves and academy enter by a separate entrance to the left of the main entrance about 50 mts away this they call the longest walk in the world as if you can walk from the junior dressing room to the first squad you have made it, very few do.
The whole complex is 45acres with 16000 trees, 5 football pitches, an indoor training area two football pitches in size 16 gardeners are employed plus 3 groundsmen.

The gyms and treatment rooms would not disgrace the finest private hospital anywhere in the world which of coarse it is I suppose everything is total state of the art, everyone is monitored all the time. The swimming pool even has a floor that goes up and down depending on what they are doing.

We finished up where we started, in the restaurant for lunch which was finger food but very good, the tour ended with a question and answer session with John Lucic who gave us an insight of what is expected of someone playing for Arsenal, almost monk like, I wouldn't qualify.

Thanks again all the members for the honour of representing our club we are truly grateful.

2012 Christmas Dinner

Arsenal Playa Flamenca Supporters Club's Christmas party was held on 11 December this year at the same venue as last year, Pablo's bar in Playa Flamenca, Spain. We were forced to restrict the sales of tickets to just members and their partners in order to ensure an ample space for dancing and entertainment. As a result, the number of the guests were fewer than last year, but 38 guests enjoyed festivity and comradeship.

The party kicked off at 7:30 pm. As is customary with PF Gooners' Christmas Dinner, Arsenal's glorious 126-year history was shown in videos compiled by Ricky, with Arsenal songs played through the evening. Unfortunately, the date clashed with Arsenal's Capital One Cup quarter-final against Bradford as the League Cup tie was re-scheduled to accommodate the TV station's needs. Fortunately, however, we had a pre-recorded message from none other than Le Prof, himself, which was shown on the screen with English subtitle, while we were enjoying traditional English Christmas dinner.

For the second year running, Arsenal trivia quiz took place. Questions were read out again this year by Mabel the Quiz mistress. The contest proved to be very close and Tony and his team won the top prize of Arsenal Quiz Champion Cava with 13 points. Les and his team came last to be presented with a booby prize of Arsene Wenger's photo in the Arsenal frame.

Following Chairman Mo's speech, raffle was drawn, which saw eight winners receiving prizes, including Arsenal polo shirts, as well as the Supporters Club raising about €104 in their fund. A football scratch card was sold expertly by our Football Card Manager, Cheryl. Tonight's winner was Brian, who generously donated €5 to the Supporters Club to add to the proceeds from the sale of the scratch card. Collections were made for Pablo's bar staff, who provided good food and friendly service.

With Arsenal's exit from the Capital One Cup the only damper, another Christmas party ended in great success.

Here are some of pictures from the party. Please visit our Facebook site for more photos.

2011 Christmas Party

Our Christmas party took place on 12 December at Pablo's bar in Playa Flamenca, Spain. Following the last year's huge success and popularity, 46 guests turned up to share festive fun and enjoy Christmas dinner and entertainment.

We were welcomed with a glass of Cava on arrival. The party kicked off at 7:30 pm and as we seated ourselves, Ricky's carefully compiled Arsenal videos started. The video archives told Arsenal's 125 year history with famous victories and stunning goals (as well as a couple of heart-breaking defeats only noticed by watchful eyes). We thought RVP's goal against Everton was exceptional and today's players were blessed with more technical abilities, but some of those goals from the old days were just breath-taking. The show was a feast for the eyes.

Between the courses, Arsenal trivia quiz questions were read out by Mabel the Quizmistress and the guests were tested on their knowledge about our great football club. Later in the evening, Maurice 22 team (Mo, Maureen Q, Mick, Maureen J, and Pat) came top with the impressive 22 points and were awarded Arsenal quiz champion Cava.

Following Chairman Mo's speech, raffle was drawn, which proved to be a success, bringing €120 into the Supporters Club fund. A football scratch card was also sold. Tonight's winner was Tony, while PF Gooners also benefitted from the proceeds.

Collections were made for Maggie and her staff, who worked hard to make all the proceedings go smoothly, and presented as our gratitude for good food and excellent service.

The night grew with dance and a few songs from the guests, including Trevor and John. It was a thoroughly enjoyable night.

We have posted only a few photos here. This year we chose to post all the party photos on our Facebook Page so we can post more photos with captions alongside them and exchange comments on each photo. Please follow the link by clicking here to have a look at more photos.

Mikel Arteta Interview

Arteta - I cannot wait to start playing
Arsenal invited us to submit questions from our club for Mikel Arteta for this interview (now available on Arsenal player for subscribers or read the article from the link above), but unfortunately it was too short a notice for us to organise ourselves for the questions. It would have been a great opportunity to get involved with the Arsenal Football Club and the player.  We have communicated to Arsenal that  if similar occasions arise in the future, we would be very  keen to participate.

If you are a member and have not registered your email address with us, please contact us at pfgooners@gmail.com. We will get in touch with you next time when we get a chance to participate in such a project.
